Academy Finals Returning to Leicester in March
- Updated: February 17, 2017

The 2017 Academy Finals Day will be returning to the Leicester Sports Arena on Wednesday, March 29th.
The National Championship finals of the Academy Basketball League (ABL), Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League (WEABL) and Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL) will all take place throughout the afternoon, tipping off at 1pm.
The EABL and WEABL are the premier junior, male and female basketball competitions in the United Kingdom, featuring the top U19 programmes in the country.
The ABL is an invite-only, high-level competition for non-AASE (Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) institutions that prioritise basketball. It is made up of 30 teams overall and split into four conferences.
As with last year, there will also be an ‘Exit & Progression Exhibition’ area, where 30 universities from across the country will be showcasing their full and part-time scholarships for basketball athletes that wish to advance both their athletic pursuits and academic studies post-Further Education.
“We’re pleased to be bringing the Academy Finals day back to the Leicester Sports Arena, which proved an incredible host venue last year,” said Charlie Ford, Basketball England’s Education & Satellite Clubs Manager.
“The Academy Finals Day is the highlight of the junior basketball calendar in this country and I have no doubt we will see some of the top talent in England taking to the floor. I’m excited to follow the finish of the regular season and play-offs to see who books their spot!”
Entrance is free for spectators, who are encouraged to come and watch.
“The finals last year were a great event with the ABL, WEABL and EABL coming together,” EABL & WEABL Chairman Jesse Sazant commented.
“Having so many teams attend made it a real celebration of the season. I’m really looking forward to this year’s event as the academy leagues continue to evolve and progress.”
The full schedule for the event is as follows:
1pm: Academy Basketball League (ABL) Final.
3pm: Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League (WEABL) Final.
5:30pm: Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL) Final.
