For the second year running, the hosts of three Regional Qualifiers of the EABL 3×3 event all advanced to the National Finals.

Copleston, Charnwood and Myerscough progress alongside Barking Abbey, Oaklands and Loreto ahead of next month’s finals, to take place on Wednesday January, 10.

Myerscough swept through their qualifier with four wins from four to progress. They opened with a 10-5 win against James Watt before beating Loreto 19-12. Edoardo Del Cadia scored 12 points in a 21-13 victory over Derby and the hosts finished with a 17-11 success against Allerton.

Loreto were the other team to advance with their loss to Myerscough their only blip with a 15-13 victory against Allerton to start before they edged out James Watt 12-10 and concluded by beating Derby 13-9.

The closest margin of victory went to Derby in a 12-11 win over James Watt, while they picked up a second win, 19-12 against Allerton, who finished bottom after falling to an 18-15 loss to James Watt.

“The 3×3 qualifiers are something we have been looking forward to and today was certainly no disappointment,” said Myerscough Head Coach, Neal Hopkins.

“Both our boys and girls team were able to go undefeated against some excellent opposition and played some great basketball in the process – we can’t wait for the next stage.”

Charnwood also went 4-0 on their home floor with convincing 21-8 and 21-10 wins over Itchen and JMA, while they had two narrow victories, beating SGS in an 18-16 thriller and Oaklands, 14-12.

Oaklands took down JMA 21-14 in their opener and after falling to Charnwood, they bounced back with a 20-17 success against Itchen before sealing their spot in the finals by beating SGS 20-17 with George scoring 13 points.

It was the second one-score loss for SGS as they missed out on progressing, despite starting with back-to-back wins over Itchen, 17-15, and JMA, 20-17.

JMA avoided the wooden spoon in the pool with a double-digit victory as they saw off Itchen, 21-11.

“It was great event and a fantastic day,” said Oaklands’ Tom Baker. “It’s great to have both Oaklands teams in the finals.

“We competed hard and played our style. If it wasn’t for a tough loss to Charnwood it would have been a perfect day for us.

“We are excited for the finals and hope we can continue from today in our regular season games.”

In Ipswich, both Copleston and Barking Abbey advanced to the National Finals despite Canterbury High School finishing as the only undefeated team on the day at 4-0.

Canterbury swept through the group, defeating Copleston 22-7, BHASVIC 21-13, CoLA 21-16, and Barking Abbey 21-11, behind the play of Tunde Oyerinde and Jonathan Brown.

Due to the Kent-based side not being available on the finals date, BA replaced them as the third place finisher.

Copleston went 2-2, picking up wins over both BHASVIC (21-5) and Barking Abbey (21-10) with Jonny Hall being their top contributor in both victories with 8 and 9 points, respectively.

“Both our teams performed well today,” Copleston Coach Nick Drane commented.

“I think the experience of last year’s competition really helped. The 3×3 is a great addition to the EABL and WEABL calendar.”

Barking Abbey also went 2-2, registering their wins over City of London Academy, 21-17, and BHASVIC, 21-9. Tautvydas Mielianskas led them with 6 and 10 points across both victories.

BHASVIC and City of London Academy both fell short of advancing, finishing up 1-3, BHASVIC getting their win over CoLA, whilst CoLA stole one from Copleston, 13-12 in the opening game of the day.
