Player of the Week: Leighton Elliott-Sewell

Derby College’s Leighton Elliott-Sewell has been named the EABL Player of the Week for Week 8 of the 2017-18 season.

Finishing with 33 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals on an efficient 12 of 19 shooting as Derby avenged an earlier loss Loreto, it marks the second time this season Leighton has picked up the award.

“I’m really delighted to get this award again, because almost always the winner of the award is on the winning team,” Elliott-Sewell said. “Getting another win and positioning ourselves for the play offs was the main goal.

“I’ve definitely been playing well lately. But it’s a full team effort to beat a good team like Loreto. We lost to them in our first EABL game of the season and I think this win probably shows how much we’ve grown as a team. I’m looking forward to the second half of the season.”

Derby Head Coach Matt Shaw added:

“I am delighted Leighton’s been recognised again with this award, he’s really developing into an outstanding player. It’s largely down to his work ethic, he had a fantastic off season committing to improving his perimeter game and also his physique. And he’s continued to improve in the first part of the season.

“He’s been able to score highly without taking a lot of shots or demanding a lot of the ball, that’s an impressive trait he has. Against Loreto and throughout the season he’s been superb defensively too.

“For our EABL team and also NBL 1 he is usually guarding the opponent’s best player so he’s impacting the game at both ends of he floor, I think that’s going to be important for him as he looks to move to a higher level.”
