Week 18 Preview – Southern Conference

Canterbury Academy

Week 18 presents some interesting EABL match ups in the Southern Conference, with four games to preview.

Copleston High School (10-4) v Canterbury Academy (8-5)

After racing through their schedule, a visit from Canterbury tomorrow represent’s Copleston’s penultimate game of the season as they look to lock up the #3 seed in the South.

With 2nd place JMA likely out of sight barring an unexpected collapse (the Rockets also own the head-to-head tiebreaker against Copleston), the Suffolk side still need to finish strong and beating 4th place Canterbury would help in that regard.

Canterbury struggled with Ethan Price’s height and presence on the glass in their first match up this season, with the forward scoring 20 points. It’ll be interesting to see if they’ve found a solution to that here, otherwise they could be in for a similar result.

BHASVIC (2-9) v John Madejski Academy (10-2)

JMA can take another step towards securing the #2 seed tomorrow as they take a trip to BHASVIC.

The Rockets won easily when these teams met in Berkshire, and it’s unlikely stepping out of the confines of their own court will do much to alter the outcome a second time around. David Chive remains in hot form, averaging 19.4ppg this season, and he’s been tough to slow down all year. Ross Stepney had 26 points in last week’s victory over USP as well, increasing the offensive options at JMA’s disposal.

Josh Last continues to impress for BHASVIC, scoring 18.8 points per contest. He dropped a team high 28 points when these sides last met but it still wasn’t enough to put the outcome in danger.

Itchen College (5-6) v Oaklands College (1-9)

Itchen retain an outside shot of reaching the post season thanks to some hot from since the turn of the year.

Tomorrow they entertain an Oaklands team that kicked started their campaign, ending an 0-4 start to the season after an 80-62 road win. With games against BHASVIC and USP still to go, coach Guymon’s side will also need to spring an upset against Copleston and possibly even leaders Barking if they’re going to secure enough points to seriously threaten Canterbury in 4th spot.

For Oaklands, they’ll see tomorrow’s game as an opportunity for progress and an outside shot of a win. The Wolves were competitive last time out in a 72-58 defeat to Copleston, and another gritty performance could yield a positive result here.

USP College (0-13) v City of London Academy (6-7)

A win against USP and a Canterbury loss to Copleston can take CoLA to within a single victory of a share of 4th spot, and that’ll be the aim as the London side takes on USP.

Given their track record so far this season, it’s difficult to image USP will be able spring a surprise. CoLA were also comfortable winners when these teams previously met, thanks in part to 21 points from Jude Lambert.
