EABL suspended until January 2021

Following this afternoon’s confirmation of lockdown measures by the Government, the 2020/21 EABL season has been suspended.

The UK Government has imposed a four-week national lockdown as part of increased measures to tackle the spread of Covid-19.

Basketball England have sought guidance from the Department of Media, Culture and Sport (DCMS), Sport England and UK Sport and confirm that, from Thursday 5 November, a number of new restrictions must be observed.

Whilst these new restrictions do allow for some elite sport to continue, the joint-organisers of the EABL competition, Association of College (AOC) Sport, have taken the move to suspend all activity until January 2021.

In a statement, AOC Sport declared that, with the new Government guidance advising against all but essential travel, plus the requirement for many sports facilities to close, suspending activity is the only realistic course of action.

The EABL now joins a number of other basketball competitions that have also been suspended, including all NBL activity outside of Division One, plus Jnr. NBL competitions.

Basketball England CEO Stewart Kellett said:

“Although this announcement and the temporary halt to the sport is disappointing and frustrating, we must all continue to play our part to follow the Government’s ruling and help the country get the virus under control.

“Getting basketball prepared for a return to play has taken real determination and commitment from members and volunteers across our game and I want to thank everyone for their vital contributions.

“However, the health, safety and well-being of our members and the wider basketball community remains our priority, so it is extremely important clubs, players, coaches, officials, officials, volunteers, parents, carers and facility providers adhere to the Government’s new national restrictions during this period.

As and when the country returns to the Government’s three-tier alert system and AOC Sport issue an update, we will reassess the situation.

In line with AOC guidance, EABL fixtures on Wednesday November 4 can still go ahead providing both teams are willing to play, thgame has been appropriately risk assessed and COVID secure measures have been taken in accordance with the Basketball England’s Return to Play guidance

Results from games completed on Wednesday 4 November will be recorded and valid for the 2020/21 season.
