#2 Charnwood College 62 – 71 #3 Copleston High School

Charnwood’s reign as EABL champions came to an end yesterday as they fell to a 71-62 home defeat against #3 seeds Copleston.

It was a slow first quarter for both teams, as there were some pretty good defensive performances throughout the contest. Copleston’s Ethan Price gained some momentum early as he had 8 straight points, keeping his side in the game during the opening period.

Greg Wild made a pair of threes to give Charnwood a lead of 20-16 going into the 2nd quarter and in that frame Ipswich was able to get out in the break and with further points from Price, the visitors were able to move ahead.

With Charnwood down by 1 going into the second half, a big push was needed on the offensive end. Despite many open looks from beyond the arc nothing seemed to drop for the home side throughout the second half, and Charnwood really struggled to break down Coplestone’s lengthy zone defence.

A low scoring 3rd quarter for both teams, 13-15 in favour of the visitors, allowed Copleston a slender three point lead with 10 minutes to play. Throughout the fourth Copleston found a bit more rhythm to their offence to open up the game. Price’s impressive offensive skills, from inside and out, allowed the reigning Southern Conference MVP to finish with a game high 33 points, securing a 21-14 win in the 4th quarter and with it, Copleston’s ticket to the Final Fours.

Head coach Will Maynard was disappointed with the way the season came to an end: “It’s always disappointing to go out the way we did yesterday. We had plenty of opportunities however we really struggled to make any shots and get into any type or rhythm on the offensive end.

“Credit to Nick and Copleston who came in with a game plan and it worked. It’s a learning moment for all of us involved at Charnwood and no doubt we will grow from this experience and be better moving forward as an academy.”

Following their win, Copleston move on to face Southern Conference top dogs Barking, a team they lost to twice during the regular season.
