Alec Reed Academy vs Copleston High School

Copleston High School took a narrow 79-81 win over Alec Reed Academy in a re-scheduled Monday night encounter.

Both teams started game at a high pace, trading baskets throughout a first period that ended with Alec Reed leading by a single point.

The lead changed hands multiple times throughout the second quarter, before the visitors were able to establish a seven point lead towards end of first half. However, six consecutive points from Josua Alimi allowed the hosts to cut the deficit and head into the half down by one.

Rio Murray scored caught fire to lead his squad with 12 third quarter points, as Alec Reed battled back into the contest. Nearing the culmination of a back-and-forth game; the hosts held a four point lead going into final stanza.

The fourth was a very close affair, as the Copleston players never looked like giving up. With 50 seconds to go, Alec Reed were three points to the good, leading 79-76, but a costly turnover led to transition triple from Ben Winter as the visitors’ point guard levelled the game. The Copleston players remained focused down the stretch, as Winter went to the line to ice two free throws and deliver a two point win for his side.

Alec Reed Coach Daniel Szatkowski said, “This was a really great game for both teams to improve. Neither team was able to hold more than a five point lead for long. We committed some really basic mistakes and the Copleston players were smart to take advantage. Congratulations to the away team.”

Rio Murray led the hosts with 22 points, supported by Mo Adan who chipped in 18. Ben Winter had a game-high 32 points to pace Copleston.

Alec Reed will travel to John Madejski to resume their EABL campaign after the Christmas break, while Copleston will host the undefeated Barking Abbey School.
