Allerton High School vs Charnwood College

EABL action returned to Leeds this week with perennial powerhouse Charnwood College Riders cruising to a 131-51 win over Allerton City of Leeds Academy.

Charnwood were physically dominant against the younger inexperienced Leeds side.

With new coaching staff at the riders helm in Angel Navarro and young coaching talent Will Maynard replacing the gifted Josh Merrington, a new style of play is apparent and the teething problems that come this early in the season would show.

For the Leicester based program impressive from the outset was Sesan Russell, defensively dominant, and captain Morgan Carter setting the early pace in scoring.

The first quarter would finish 20 – 25, as the Riders were perhaps surprised by the resilience of the young Allerton group.

With several adjustments from the Riders coaching staff, increased pressure and change ups in both their press and half court philosophy they imposed themselves. Half time it was 52-34 and then the storm arrived with two massive quarters from Charnwood 37-9 and 42 -8, with a high distribution in scoring across the red and white and some notable plays for the highlight reel.

Charnwood were led by Joe Bielak’s 25, Morgan Carter with 22 and Sesan Russell with 21. For Allerton Resendez (12), Aldridge (9) and Weatherill (7).

The final score perhaps reflected the depth of the Leicester roster and the age and stage of development of the young Allerton program. Coach Newby did take the opportunity to give his later rotation of his roster a taste of the EABL, and commented:

“Ultimately we need to understand who and where we are with some many players new to this environment. You can see that our boys are raw and not used to the tempo and talent they are matching up with. However, it’s a two year process and the EABL is the benchmark.”
