Barking Abbey School vs Itchen College

Barking Abbey’s undefeated streak of almost two years in the EABL came to an end on Tuesday with an 80-84 OT loss to Itchen.

With BA already having locked up the East Conference title, they were let down by a poor second half and plagued by poor free throw shooting. A potential game winning attempt at the end of regulation fell short, as the visiting side dominated the extra period behind the play of Matt Hughes, who had 31 points on 12 of 15 shooting to lead Itchen, whilst Aaron Berida had 17.

BA were led by 17 points and 11 rebounds from Spyros Kapsalos, whilst Daniel Delgado had 14 and Ade Adebayo joined them in double figures with 12.

“It was a strange game today with both teams already through to their respective quarter finals later this week,” BA Head Coach James Vear said.

“I felt like we were in control most of the game but played a really bad fourth quarter which hurt us. We missed a lot of free throws down the stretch and Matt (Guymon), who I think is one of the best coaches in all the EABL, did a really good job at the end of the game and in OT.

“It’s unfortunate we have lost the win streak of nearly 2 years but we get to right the wrongs straight away as we play Loreto tomorrow.”

The game started as a back and forth affair despite low energy from both teams as the opening period ended up tied at 19.

BA picked it up in the second quarter, getting out in transition led by Kapsalos, Adebayo and Robin Bedford. Daniel Delgado set the tone defensively, as BA led 43-36 at halftime.

A poor start to the second half saw Itchen capitalise, taking the lead in the third before BA put their starts back in to regain control setting up a dramatic finish that saw both teams battle in the fourth and BA’s game-winning attempt come up shot to send the game to overtime.

Bedford scored the first four points in OT as BA appeared to have the edge but from there on out Itchen dominated to take the game.

The result meant little with both teams having their playoff match-ups set; BA face Loreto on Wednesday, whilst Itchen take on Charnwood.
