Barking Abbey School vs John Madejski Academy

Barking Abbey overcame a poor first half and a double-digit deficit to move to 6-0 in the EABL Southern Conference with a 75-58 win over John Madejski Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

The visitors started the game right from the tip with a score from Adrian Nosa Castillo, gaining a lead that they never lost throughout the first half. A triple from David Chive gave JMA their largest lead of the game at 21-11, before a 9-0 run at the end of the first quarter brought Barking Abbey back into contention.

The second half was won by Barking Abbey as they put together a solid defensive effort, holding JMA to just 23 points in the half. The visitors were held to just two three-point shots in the first six minutes of the third quarter as BA took a lead that they never gave up.

Jonathan Brown lead a balance scoring day for Barking Abbey with 13, while Spyridon Kapsalos and Tom Sowoolu had 12 apiece.

Arinze Emeka-Anayakwo finished with a double-double to lead JMA with 20 points and 10 rebounds, supported by David Chive with 12 and David Obediah with six.

Barking Abbey Coach Lloyd Gardner commented, “It was a poor start from us today. I thought we weren’t ready to play in the first few minutes of the game and JMA caused us problems. But we dealt with it well and used some strong defence to get ourselves back into the game. I was pleased that even though we didn’t shoot the ball well today we were able to put in a good performance led by that defensive end.”

Barking Abbey will be on the road against Alec Reed next week, whilst JMA welcome Canterbury to Reading.
