BMET James Watt vs Derby College/Noel Baker School

BMET James Watt College recorded their fifth win of the season with a 61-42 victory over Derby College in Birmingham.

Daniel Penkov had 17, David Stevic 13 and Conner Lynch 11 for BMET James Watt, whilst Derby were led by 8 each from Charlie Brown and Leighton Elliott-Sewell, and Jra Lue added 7.

The game started out slow with both teams bringing the defensive intensity one would expect for two teams vying for a play-off spot. The West-Midlands based team took advantage of their superior size to take an early lead behind their front court. James Watt would win the first quarter 15-11.

The second quarter wouldn’t be any different as both teams locked in on the defensive end. Neither team could score in transition and the game became a half court chess match with both teams struggling to make plays. James Watt and Derby would tie the second quarter 13-13, going into half-time with a 28-24 lead.

The third quarter would see both teams battle for control of the game but James Watt with their superior inside play would control most of the quarter with a 13-point lead at one stage. However, Derby would fight back with three minutes remaining in the quarter to bring them within 2 points of their hosts. James Watt would lose the third quarter 14-16 taking just a 2-point lead into the final period.

The fourth quarter would see James Watt answer with a 12 point burst behind excellent outside shooting and half court offence to take the win.

James Watt Head Coach Nigel Hanson commented: “It’s a very good win for us as we simply brought our strategic effort of the season.”

The game concluded the regular season for both teams.
