Canterbury Academy 57 – 76 Copleston High School

Copleston made it back to back wins with a comprehensive 76-57 win over Canterbury in EABL action Wednesday.

Copleston was able to win all 4 quarters behind their leading trio of Jacob Morgan, Ben Winter and Ethan Price as they answered every question Canterbury asked. Winter was understandably pleased saying, “This is a huge win for us. We’ve got a lot better already this season and it was important to see that in the win column against quality opponents.”

The game was a battle of styles, between Canterbury’s outside game and Copleston’s inside game. Early on neither team was able to take control. Chester Morrell and Robbie Graham hit a pair of three pointers each, but 11 points from Winter gave Copleston a 26-22 lead at the end of a high scoring first quarter.

The game slowed considerably in the second quarter with both teams struggling to score at times. 14 first half from Morgan were able to propel Copleston to a 41-33 halftime lead.

The third quarter continued in the same vein, with Morgan continuing to lead the way, scoring 7 points for the third straight quarter. 5 late points from Kieran Farrell kept the door open for Canterbury but Copleston entered the final period leading 56-45.

In his second game back from injury, Price was fairly quiet scoring only 5 points in the opening 3 quarters. However he came to life in the fourth scoring 12 consecutive points to stretch the lead beyond 15 and effectively end the game.

Morgan finished with a game high 21, while Price added 20 and Winter 19. For Canterbury Graham led the way with 17, followed by Morrell with 16 and Jonathan Fakile with 10.

Canterbury head coach Adam Davies was disappointed with the performance and result, saying: “Fair play to Ipswich who worked us today both tactically and physically. We have a lot to reflect on and be better at for our next game.”

Canterbury falls to 4-2 in EABL Southern Conference and after a week off, face a trip to undefeated JMA where they will look to snap a two game losing streak. Copleston’s second win in a row improves their record to 4-3 as they host Itchen next week.
