Canterbury High School vs City of London Academy

Canterbury opened the EABL season with a 67-63 win over City of London Academy on Wednesday.

Canterbury led for all 40 minutes, taking a commanding 46-30 halftime lead. But the second half was a different story as Canterbury had to hold off a furious second half comeback from the visitors to secure the win.

Jonathan Brown was happy with the result saying:

“It was a good game to test our mental focus, especially when the game didn’t go our way in the second half. But we kept working hard and were able to finish the game off.”

Canterbury stormed out of the gate, scoring in transition and the half court to take an early 25-11 lead. CoLA responded to start the second quarter and chipped away into the lead but another late run pushed the lead to 16 by halftime.

Things quickly changed as Patrick Lanipekun sparked a 7-0 run to start the half as CoLA started to close the gap. A shot clock buzzer beater 3 from Brown, helped Canterbury group and they held a 57-44 lead entering the final quarter.

CoLA’s charge continued as they slowly ate into the deficit. With 3:30 left, the lead was still 8 but CoLA kept coming. Twice they cut the lead to 3 in the final minute, but both times Canterbury converted foul shots to ensure it remained a 2 possession game.

Brown top scored for Canterbury with 18 points, supported by Tune Oyerinde with 17 and Elliot Bailey with 12. Lanipekun led CoLA with 16, while Peter Turray joined him in double figures with 15.

Next week Canterbury travel to Itchen, who are also 1-0, while CoLA host Copleston, with both teams looking for their first win.
