Charnwood College Riders 109 – 63 SGS College

Charnwood took on SGS College in the EABL yesterday, securing a comfortable 109-63 win.

A steady start to the first saw Charnwood take a 14-6 lead, including two big 3s from eventual top scorer Greg Durand.

Bristol continued to fight, however Charnwood’s defence stepped up which forced SGS into mistakes which resulted in transition scores for the hosts. With rotations of players coming in and keeping the speed up, Charnwood ended the quarter leading 32-15.

The second quarter saw the visitors apply more pressure and out working Charnwood to gain some easy scores.

A big 3 from Kanu Gudza stopped all momentum and allowed Charnwood to maintain a 39-23 lead half way through the second. Back to back transition scores from both Greg Wild and Greg Durand forced Bristol into a time out with 46-27 with 4 minutes left. Both teams continued to trade baskets saw the half finishing 60-38.

The third quarter saw both teams come out slow offensively and with more intent on defence, with the score creeping to 65-44 half way through the third.

Charnwood increased their defence through rotations, keeping their opponents to 1 point over the last 5 minutes of the quarter.

The fourth quarter saw a lot of them same, with the visitors still battling all the way until the final buzzer, despite the score line.

“Good defensive effort from the guys in the second half, something we’ve been working on last couple of week,” said Charnwood head coach Will Maynard.

“It was good for them to take ownership of what was needed and apply to the game.”
