Charnwood College vs Canterbury High School

Charnwood college secured a home win in the quarter finals of the EABL  playoffs, defeating Canterbury high school 84 points to 74.

A relatively slow start to the game from an offensive standpoint for both teams, saw some strong defensive plays throughout the first period including a couple of huge blocks by Charnwood’s Hosana Kitenge and some great on ball defence from Canterbury’s Sesay. Charnwood took a narrow lead after the 1st period 15-13. The second quarter opened up, with Kitenge finishing inside, Harris grabbing multiple offensive rebounds and foul shots which saw Charnwood put some points on the board. However, strong quarters from Gordon, Raife and Alajiki kept Canterbury right within the game. Charnwood would lead at the half by a narrow margin of 4 points.

The second half opened up for both teams with Joe Bielak finding his range from 3 on his way to a game high 22 points, and Canterbury hitting 5 threes during the third period, including a corner three for Morrell on the buzzer to end the quarter 63 to 57 in Charnwood’s favour. As much as Charnwood tried to pull away throughout the game, Canterbury’s determined gritty defence never saw them give up and fight all the way through to the final buzzer.

Head coach Will Maynard added, “Its was a scrappy win for us, I thought Canterbury did a great job at getting us out of our style of play and we never really found a rhythm throughout the game. It was a good challenge for this group today and a good way to start the play off run to get us ready for the next game. We have to be better in the semi finals if we want to advance, we need some great practices and need better focus going forward. Massive credit to Canterbury and all coaching staff their who didn’t stop playing hard all the way through.”

Joe Bielak topped all scorers with 22 points, whilst Niall Harris and Hosana Kitenge both had double-doubles. Harris with 20points and 16 rebounds and Kitenge with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

J Moore for Canterbury Led the scoring with 21 points whilst Milo Gordon added a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Charnwood will face Itchen next Wednesday in the semi-final of the EABL on their home floor.
