Charnwood College vs Derby College/Noel Baker School
- Updated: February 6, 2017
Charnwood College Riders took down Derby College 101-67 on Wednesday afternoon behind a huge 36 point outing from Johde Campbell.
Charnwood started the game brightly, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead with Campbell scoring 6 and Romario Spence adding 4. Derby coach Matt Shaw called an early timeout to rally the troops and his team responded well, going on a 12-6 run to reduce the deficit to 4 at the end of the first quarter.
Derby’s zone defence slowed Charnwood down early in the second quarter, but 3 straight triples from Kyle Jimenez gave the hosts some separation as they also tightened up their defence and extended the lead to 42-26 going in to the half.
The teams traded baskets early in the third, before Campbell began to score at will, scoring 14 of his 36 points in the period, proving too much for the Derby defence. Charnwood’s lead was up to 28 points at 73-45 going in to the fourth. Derby got hot from the 3 point line in the fourth quarter, connecting on 9 3 pointers in the second half, but were unable to close the gap with Campbell continuing his strong scoring display.
Charnwood Head Coach Josh Merrington commented after the game:
“It was an up and down performance again for us, especially on the defensive end. I think the score actually flatters us a little and Derby deserve a lot of credit for disrupting our rhythm for large parts of the game. I thought Johde was outstanding today, he really led by example.”
Morgan Carter (19), Jimenez (11) and Spence (10) all joined Campbell in double figures. Brian Amabilino led Derby with 17, Sam Coles added 16.
Both teams have a two week break until March 1st when Charnwood will host Loreto and Derby will host SGS.
