Charnwood College vs Itchen College

A great game between two great sides saw Charnwood defeat Itchen on their home court 79-61 in the EABL Semi-final.

Itchen came out of the gates with great energy and some real aggressive play. Jeremy Sochan led the charge with some tough finishes and some excellent defensive possessions, he finished the game with 10 point, 7 of which came within the first quarter. Charnwood struggled to find their rhythm in the first and couldn’t really get their offence going. However Blaize Sagna and Hosana Kitenge kept the home team within touching distance coming for 13 out of the 15 point in the quarter. Itchen would lead by 6 going into the second. Charnwood stepped up the defence in the second only allowing Itchen to score 8 points throughout the period. On the offensive end it was the big man Hosana Kitenge who led the home team with some great scores inside, as his 10 points in the quarter pushed his total up to 18 at the half. Back-to-back threes at the end of the half from Niall Harris then saw Charnwood win the quarter and lead 35 to 29.

In the second half ,Charnwood took it up another level to start the third with some great early defence to start the quarter, which forced the away team to call an early time out with Charnwood getting their lead up into double digits. Charnwood didn’t look back throughout the second half and kept on looking to push on the lead, however, Itchen kept on fighting, with the big man Turay leading the way with his team high 22 points. Some great offensive rebounds from Itchen kept them within touching distance throughout periods of the 2nd half. However, some great ball movement from the Riders saw some great offensive displays to see them take the game with an 18 point victory.

Charnwood’s point guard Blaize Sagna was pleased to reach the final saying: “We didn’t have a great start to the game, but we came together especially in the second quarter to hold them to only 8 points. Extremely proud of all the team mates, we worked really hard to get to the final. We have a lot more to achieve now and we can still play better as a team. Extremely excited to play in another final with Charnwood and cant wait to play.”

Hosana Kitenge led all scorers with 23 points whilst Niall Harris had 22 points, whilst Blaize Sagna chipped in with 16 of his own. Charnwood will now face Barking Abbey in a repeat of the last years Semi-Final, on April 3 in Essex.
