- Updated: February 28, 2017
Charnwood College Riders defeated Loreto College 96-68 on Wednesday afternoon behind a 28 point triple double from Johde Campbell.
Campbell finished with 11 rebounds, 11 assists and 5 steals to stuff the stat sheet as Charnwood remain undefeated on the season.
The first quarter was a back and forth affair with Michael Anumba leading Loreto in the early stages with 12 first quarter points. Charnwood got balanced scoring with 7 players scoring in the first quarter to take a 22-19 lead after 10 minutes.
The game remained close in the second period, with both teams punishing each other’s mistakes. A timeout and switch of defence from Charnwood midway through the period spurred a 16-4 run to close the half and open up an 18 point cushion at 48-30 going in to the break.
Sesan Russell drove down the lane and finished with a big two handed dunk to open the second half as Charnwood’s offence began to click and they put the game out of reach from the visitors, running out 96-68 winners.
Charnwood Head Coach Josh Merrington commented after the game:
“I thought today was a really good game for us, there’s a lot we can take from it. Loreto played very well in the first half. They challenged us defensively and punished us for our mistakes. I thought we played really well in stages as we try to find some rhythm heading in to the playoffs.”
Morgan Carter (19), Russell (14), Jimenez (11) all joined Campbell in double figures. Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo led Loreto with 24 points while Anumba added 22.
Charnwood will travel to Myerscough next Wednesday in their final regular season game, whilst Loreto have finished league play and will await results elsewhere as they look to clinch a playoff berth.
