Charnwood College vs Myerscough College

Charnwood College continued their unbeaten start to the year with a close 73-67 victory over Myerscough College, as they improved to 4-0 in the Northern Conference.

The two teams showed their class in the opening quarter with both squads showing why they have had unbeaten starts to the campaign. However, a strong shooting display from Charnwood saw them take an eight point lead at the end of the first period behind three-pointers from Blaize Sagna, Niall Harris and Joe Bielak. Another strong performance from the hosts in the second quarter allowed them to stretch their lead to 14 going into half-time.

Myerscough’s class and determination saw a much closer second half of basketball. Despite a deficit, the visitors continued to fight back to get well within touching distance. Charnwood struggled against the overall size of Myerscough’s defence, but the North West side still trailed by nine points at the end of the third.

Another strong defensive performance in the final quarter saw Myerscough pull within five points, but a couple of strong drives to the basket by Ethan Damerum stopped the Charnwood scoring drought. A number of turnovers from the home side in the final minutes of the game allowed Myerscough to pull within six points at the final buzzer, but Charnwood held on to come away with a crucial victory.

Charnwood Coach Will Maynard was pleased with the result but believes there are improvements to be made, “Obviously happy with the result, its always a great match up between two great academies. We really need to work on valuing possessions, especially down the stretch and be a little bit smarter with decision making.”

“What worked well for us was our attention to detail on the defensive end. Niall Harris did a great job on Mate Okros throughout the game, and believe Joe Bielak did a great job on Callan Low. Credit to Neal and Myerscough for fighting and showing their class. There is a long way to go for this team but I am excited to see how far we can go,” Maynard added.

Undoubtedly it will be another exciting game the next time these two teams meet up on 30 January. The immediate concerns for these teams see Charnwood match up next Wednesday at home against SGS College, while Myerscough host The Sheffield College.
