Charnwood College vs SGS College

Charnwood College got back to winning ways with a 101-48 victory over SGS College on Wednesday afternoon.

Up 26 at halftime, Charnwood dominated the third to seal the victory, holding SGS to just 3 points whilst scoring 20 to pull away for good.

Sesan Russell led Charnwood with 14, whilst Marcus Quirk and Niall Harris added 13 each.

Corey Samuels led SGS with 14, whilst AJ Edu had 9, and Aiden Khan 6.

It was SGS who jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Charnwood reacted with an 11-0 run of their own led by solid defence.

Charnwood soon harassed SGS’ stronger players into a lack of comfort on the court. Charnwood started a defensive masterclass that soon put 20 points up in the scoreboard. At the half, the difference was 26 points up for Riders, 56-30, with 10 players doing their best in the court.

Defence was the key. And that is how Riders were thinking during the halftime break. They let only 3 points in this third quarter. Helps, traps, steals, put SGS out of control.

SGS Coach Guy Coles made many changes in his rotations and also defence with zone, traps and full court press, but Riders didn`t let them score. The game was over at the end of this quarter with a 76-33 scoreline.

In the final quarter both coaches gave minutes to their bench. Riders kept up the same speed with some brilliant scores getting them to once again put more than 100 points on the board.

Charnwood also managed to hold SGS star AJ Edu to just 9 points; one in the second half.

Charnwood Head Coach Angel Navarro commented:

“We needed this win against SGS because our first loss last week put some doubts in our mind about what we are doing. We know that we can score fluently and if we add this kind of defence we can enjoy and win. SGS is a really good team with a good coach and very good players, so that this victory we could say is very important.”

Both teams will break for the Christmas holiday now until the competition resumes on January 24th.
