City of London Academy vs John Madejski Academy

Wednesday afternoon saw the battle for playoff solidification take place at CoLA with the South East London academy defeat JMA 72-63 after they had made the journey in the snow on a day that saw many games cancelled.

Patrick Lanipekun lead CoLA with 25 points, Jordan Okonji had 11 and Ade Adeniran 7, whilst Alex Drincic led JMA with 20 points and Adrian Nosa Castillo had 12.

CoLA Head Coach Sterling Muschett said after the game: “JMA didn’t make it easy for us, with every score and stop being crucial today. Our captain Ade Adeniran willed the players today and Patrick was relentless with his drives to the cup and constant communication on the defensive end.

“Outside of our victory being a total team effort, Jordan Okonji set the tone giving us another low post option.”

CoLA took an early 11-5 in the first quarter behind Patrick Lanipekun and Jordan Okonji. Alex Drincic then scored the next 8 points for JMA, doing his best to keep the opponents within touching distance. CoLA then went on a 14-3 run to end the first quarter with a 9 point lead 25-16.

The second quarter saw both teams score 16 points-a-piece with the coaches focusing heavily on the defensive end giving nothing to either offence. However, CoLA went into the half up by 9, 41-32.

The third quarter saw JMA dig in and limit CoLA to very few scoring opportunities despite the efforts of Lanipekun and Dylan Darbin who scored all 11 of CoLA’s points. CoLA however were being just as stingy and doing their best to limit JMA to minimal second chance points.

Going into the fourth with CoLA’s lead trimmed to 7 points, “we became more aggressive on the defensive end for longer periods,” said Coach Sterling. With third spot at stake CoLA got to the free throw line an 14 times in the last quarter and missing only 4, the South Londoners pulled away for the 9 point win 72 – 63.

CoLA have one final home stand on Friday March 2nd when they host Itchen, looking to avenge their one point loss earlier in the month, whilst JMA await other results to find out their final league position.
