City of London Academy 83 v 69 Copleston High School

City of London Academy grabbed their first win of the season following an 83-69 victory over Copleston High School.

The first home game of the season for CoLA against a good Copleston team started off with captain Will White scoring twice in an 8-0 run for home team. Copleston composed themselves and hit back with 9-0 run, including two 3 pointers from Seb Mobee off the bench and captain Ben Winter. CoLA stepped up the defensive pressure holding the visitors to 16 whilst scoring 21 points of their own to end the first quarter.

Copleston came out aggressively with a 6-0 run before Kavell responded with 3 pointer for the hosts. Both teams went back and forth for the rest of the period trying to get a rhythm, leaving CoLA ahead 38-34 at the half time break.

Copleston again began strongly in the 3rd quarter with a 9-2 run involving two 3 pointers and consistent defensive pressure, forcing turnovers for the home side but it was 9 points in a row from shooting guard Oscar Leigh-Hales that kept CoLA alive. Copleston won the period by a point and headed in the 4th down by just three.

More sharpshooting from CoLA in the 4th, hitting four 3’s including a pair from Kavell Hawes who finished with 15, and two mid range from Leigh-Hales who led all scorers with 22 saw CoLA run out winners and grab their first victory of the season.

Interim Head Coach Jay Williams said of the game “I’m really happy with our boys’ performance today, we’ve had an indifferent start to the season with me not really knowing the group I’m working with. Every game we’ve been focusing on small wins rather than the end outcome, today we continued that focus and it so happens it resulted in a win. The boys are really buying in and I’m glad we got the win over a strong Copleston team, I was impressed with them too. Everyone at CoLA sends our best wishes and a speedy recovery to the young man who left with an injury”

Next week CoLA will host Oakland’s whilst Copleston host last year’s finalists Barking Abbey.
