City of London Academy vs Barking Abbey School

City of London Academy hosted Barking Abbey School on Wednesday, in a matchup that is always a competitive contest. A back-and-forth game ended in a 48-72 victory the visitors who improved to 3-0 in EABL Southern Conference play.

The first quarter saw CoLA jump out to an early seven point lead behind the play of Dylan Darbin and point guard Termon Serrant, but after a timeout and re-group Barking were able to take control of the quarter. They held CoLA to just four further points in period as they held a 11-16 advantage heading into the first quarter break.

The second quarter saw the hosts held to 11 points once again, whilst the visitors exploded for 25 behind a stingy defensive effort which allowed them to capitalise on CoLA turnovers.

“The boys are going to go through situations like this against different schemes and we have to be able to respond in the correct manner, tactically and mentally. Saying that, we are capable of doing the same against others”, said CoLA Coach Sterling Muschett after the loss.

The third quarter saw more of the same as Barking took advantage of CoLA forcing the dribble too much on offense, as they also struggled to get back in transition on the defensive end.

The fourth quarter was too-little, too-late as CoLA held the visitors to just 10 points in period, but game was already of reach as Barking clinched a 48-72 win.

Coach Muschett added, “We were punished today because of sustained tactical and mental lapses. This performance has to be channelled into a positive as there is only one way we are going to proceed. Credit to Barking, they capitalise on their combination of depth and experience to make every game against them very difficult.”

Dylan Darbin and Kaleb Woldeyes led CoLA with 10 points a piece whilst Jonathan Brown led three double figure scorers for Barking with 14 points.

After the half-term break, CoLA will be aiming to get back to winning ways when they host Itchen College, whilst Barking will host John Madejski Academy, looking to keep their win streak alive.
