Copleston High School 83 – 75 Itchen College

Copleston made it three wins in a row with a hard fought 83-75 win against Itchen College.

Copleston came into the game off the back of their best performance of the season, while Itchen were fresh off their first win in the EABL this term.

Copleston started the better of the two teams, opening up an double figure lead in the first quarter, but as Itchen rallied in the second period, it became clear that this one was going to be decided over the full forty minutes.

The hosts held a six point lead at the half, but with Itchen gaining the momentum early in the third, and when Ben Winter was forced to the bench with a suspected broke finger, it looked as though the visitors were in the driving seat.

However, Copleston showed how far they have come this season. With Winter out of the game, IBA upped their defence, with massive contributions off the bench from Ahmeed Yusoof and Danny Manning while Seb Mobee filled in for Winter at the point guard position. Key shots from Jacob Morgan allowed Copleston to keep their noses in front, and in Ethan Price the Ipswich side have the reigning league MVP, who simply took over the game.

Winter re-entered the game mid way through the fourth to lift his team, making key plays while playing almost one handed. For Itchen, Josh Sissons and Tiago Forster made massive plays as the game entered its closing moments. With just 9 seconds remaining, Price knocked down two free throws, to make it seventeen for him in the second half as Copleston scrapped their way to victory.

IBA were led by Price who had 29, helped by 25 from Jacob Morgan. Josh Sissons led Itchen with 17.

“This is a great win for us. The boys now have a week off where we can focus on practice and getting ready for the final push before Christmas. Itchen are always tough. Don’t be fooled by their record. They have had a rough schedule to start the season,” commented Copleston head coach Nick Drane.

Assistant coach Adam Robinson added: “We are in a good spot right now. The boys are really applying themselves which is great to see. Itchen is always a tough game. We had a lot of guys stepping up, and our leaders were outstanding today. Ben playing through pain and Ethan, who is just awesome – and so tall”.
