Copleston High School vs John Madejski Academy

John Madejski Academy picked up an important road win against Copleston Sixth Form 84-81 at Copleston Centre.

Off the back of 21 points from first year forward Sam Grant, JMA were able to hold off a quick Copleston start to ensure a key victory as the playoff picture in the South Conference begins to heat up.

JMA weathered a 17-7 run from Copleston to begin the game and fought back to win the first quarter, and despite a good shooting display from the home team to start the second half, an important 3-point buzzer beater at the end of the 3rd would see the visitors take a slim lead going into the final period. This lead was held onto until the end.

Grant started strong from beyond the arc before moving his offence inside and was a constant threat for the away side and despite an excellent 27 points from Ethan Price, Copleston’s offensive runs were short lived and lost the rebound battle in another competitive game in the EABL South.

Adrian Nosa Castillo scored 14 and David Chive 13, including crucial 3 at the end of the third, to help JMA over the finish line, while Ben Winter and Veron Eze added 18 and 17 for the home side.

“Both teams have improved a lot since our last outing earlier in the season, and the quality of basketball on show was a testament to both programmes” said Copleston Head Coach Nick Drane. “It’s another close game we’ve dropped at home, which the players will have to learn could cost you later in the season. I’m very proud of how we played, and all the credit has to go to JMA, but a one possession loss always leaves you a little gutted, but we’re a very young team who will no doubt get better because of experiences like this.”

Copleston will look to bounce back next week on the road to BHASVIC while JMA host Oaklands in Reading.
