Copleston High School 101 v 70 USP College

Copleston High School started their 2019/20 season with a comfortable 101-70 win against USP College (previously SEEVIC).

Copleston had a very different look to the team from last year, with Veron Eze having moved on while Ethan Price and Jacob Morgan, were both absent, carrying injuries that are expected to see them miss multiple games.

The hosts opened up a double digit lead early in the game, which allowed Coach Nick Drane to introduce all twelve players on his roster by the start of the second quarter. USP had no answer for the pace and athletic finishing of Ben Winter, while the power of young inside duo Harry Syrett and Harry Gent allowed the Ipswich side to dominate the game physically. IBA led 30-17 after the first period and extended that lead to 58-26 by the half.

The second half was something of a formality, with the home side using the cushion to try some new things and provide more experience to the team’s bench. USP played their best basketball in the second half and closed the gap on numerous occasions. However, behind the leadership of Winter, and the dynamic play of guards Seb Mobee, Danny Manning, Ahmeed Yusoof and Emmanuel Onwuka, Copleston rounded off a comprehensive win.

Copleston Head Coach Nick Drane: “We are riddled with injuries so we’re very fortunate to have a deeper bench than the last couple of years. There were some pleasing moments and certainly a few that will need some attention ahead of what we anticipate will be a very tough test next week at JMA.”

Ipswich were led by Ben Winter’s 29 points, while Harry Syrett added 13 points and 16 rebounds for the double-double. USP were paced by a team high 13 from Demi Adeyeye.

Copleston travel to JMA next week while USP host BHASVIC.
