Derby College/Noel Baker School vs Charnwood College

Charnwood kept up their chase for the EABL Western conference title going largely thanks to an impressive 30-9 fourth quarter to claim the 82-66 victory over Derby College on Wednesday.

Until that point, it had been a very even game. Charnwood had opened up an early 10 point lead at 37-27 but the Trailblazers responded well, thanks to fine work from Leighton Elliott-Sewell who had 21 of his game-high 26 in the first half. At the break the Riders held a small 41-42 advantage.

Through out the game Charnwood managed to connect with a bunch of three pointers, they hit 15 in total while Derby only managed 2 of their own. But the hosts hung around getting to the basket frequently as Jacques Misambu in particular made several nice moves to keep the scoreboard ticking and when Luke Ptak drove baseline and finished with a dunk the Trailblazers found themselves ahead. That third quarter run meant a 57-52 lead going into the final period.

The final period saw Charnwood make a variety of good plays led by Russell who had 23 points along with a handful of assists. Carter, who had 14 personal was also influential in the fourth and with four different players hitting from downtown Derby couldn’t quite find answer.

Derby coach Matt Shaw commented:

“I was really pleased with our effort today. We give up quite a bit of size to Charnwood but the guys battled hard and tried to find a way. We gave ourselves a chance going into final few minutes but it wasn’t to be.

“We didn’t hit many shots today, but the good thing is that’s something we know we can and will improve on. Charnwood played a great fourth quarter and that proved to be the difference on the day.”

Hosana Kitenge added 12 for Charnwood.

Misambu added 15 for Derby, with Ptak having 11.

Next up for Derby will be a visit to Myerscough while Charnwood host BMET on the same day, February 21.
