Derby Trailblazers Academy 78 – 87 Charnwood College

With both sides going into the game with 5-1 records this promised to be a great battle and it didn’t disappoint as Charnwood secured a hard fought 87-78 win.

The first half was played at an intense pace, with both sides finding ways to score on the break and also in the half court. Bowman and Sanga had a two minute spell where they traded baskets, both making fiercely contested threes and mid range pull ups.

Meade-Bramble provided some good support in terms of scoring for Derby, while Wild did the same for Charnwood – they had 10 each at the half.

The second half was a different story, much more of a defensive battle and it proved to be Charnwood who were able to get more stops. Derby’s foul shooting deserted them, as a team they went 3 for 17 from the foul line in the second half as the basket seemed to have a lid on it.

Although Charnwood’s scoring was also halted, they found enough ways to keep the scoreboard ticking. The third quarter ended 65-74 to the visitors.

Derby tried to make inroads during the fourth, but the closest they got was five points and Charnwood held out for a well earned win and sole possession of 2nd place.

After the game Derby coach Matt Shaw remarked “It was a great game of basketball, two teams who battled hard. I’m proud of the way the guys competed. The lads are gutted, they left everything on the floor. We must reflect then move on to the next game and learn from this one.”
