Itchen College 89 – 80 Canterbury Academy

Itchen were able to clinch an important home win against Canterbury 89-80.

Canterbury started the better of the teams, with their trademark ball movement and 3 point shooting. Itchen’s Taiga Forster was able to keep the scoreboard ticking over with 2 of his game high 7 3 pointers. At 13-10, Canterbury went on 7-0 run leading to an Itchen timeout. The teams traded baskets after the timeout and the visitors held the lead, 26-18 going into the quarter break.

The 2nd quarter saw Itchen play some of their best basketball of the season, making six 3 pointers and holding the high scoring Canterbury to 12 points, taking the lead into half 51-38.

Itchen extended their lead to 17 in the opening minutes of the 2nd half(57-40), but Canterbury were able to close the lead back to 10 behind some excellent play from Chester Morrell and Daniel Oghagbon. Every run that Canterbury were able to go on Itchen were able to provide a response to keep the visitors at bay. The 3rd quarter would finish 71-64 after scores from Morrell and Vaughan, keeping the pressure on the home side.

In the final quarter, Canterbury would again keep the pressure on Itchen and a 5-0 run in the middle of the quarter (79-72) would lead to an Itchen timeout. Out of the timeout a Josh Sissions 3 regained a double digit lead. After the teams traded baskets in the final few minutes Itchen were able to hold on and win 89-80.

“I’m really proud of our guys and the focus and energy they played with today,” said itchen head coach Matt Guymon.

“This game keeps our playoffs hopes alive and I felt the players left it all out on the floor today.

“Obviously, shooting the ball as well as we did(making 13 threes) was huge and allowed us to keep Canterbury at bay down the stretch.

“We now look forward to the Christmas break and focusing on some very important fixtures in 2020.”

Top scorers for Itchen were Taiga Forster with 28, Tyreese Hudson on 20 and Josh Sissions with 17. For Canterbury, Chester Morrell had 25, Will Raife scored 12 and Danny Oghagbon added 12 more.
