Itchen College 79 – 102 Copleston High School

Itchen College’s playoff hopes took a dent after a strong 2nd half performance from Copleston led to an eventual 201-79 win.

A physical start to the contest lead to a low scoring 1st quarter from both teams as Itchen would take a 15-11 lead.

Copleston were able to assert their physical dominance early in the 2nd quarter and a quick 5 points from Ben Winter, saw an early timeout from Itchen to regroup.

The remainder of the quarter the teams would trade baskets. A lay-up on the half-time buzzer gave Itchen a 1 point lead going into the break.

The opening minutes of the 3rd quarter the teams continued to trade baskets and at 49-48, Copleston would ignite a 19-0 run behind their disruptive zone and excellent play of Ben Winter.

Itchen would use a timeout to break up the scoring run, but to no avail. Copleston’s lead would extend to 20 at the quarter break.

The 4th quarter was a formality as Itchen were never able to spark a meaningful run and Copleston cruised to a healthy victory.

“After a positive 1st half, it was incredibly disappointing to see our composure & focus disappear at such an important time in the game,” said Itchen head coach Matt Guymon.

“Credit to Copleston who played very well in the 2nd half at both ends of the floor. Ultimately I felt like the biggest difference in the game was Ben Winter who was exceptional and easily the best performances I’ve seen in our gym this year.

“This has been a hit for our playoff hopes, but we have still got an opportunity next week to secure that 4th spot.

“We have to learn from this one quickly and get back to work for next week”.

Top scorers for Itchen were Taiga Forster on 20, Steve Nwagwu with 15 and Tyreese Hudson on 10.

Copleston were led by the impressive Ben Winter, who finished on 38 points. Harry Gent chipped in 18 points and Jacob Morgan had 14.
