Itchen College vs Alec Reed Academy

Itchen College were able to secure a 92-89 win against previously undefeated Alec Reed, behind 35 points from Peter Turay.

The game opened at a fast pace with both teams getting easy scores in transition. Back-to-back triples from Alec Reed’s Dovydas Golovcenko and Guled Abokhar would see the visitors take a 17-19 lead, before a 11-4 run to finish the quarter from the home team would see Itchen lead 28-23 after the first period.

The second quarter saw a quick flurry of scores for Alec Reed from Mo Adan and Edmund Lartey to momentarily regain the lead, but this would ignite an 11-0 run by the hosts that would give them a double digit lead in the final minutes of the half. Rio Murray would stop the run with an inside score for he visitors, before Rhys Sundimalt responded with a three-pointer then Adan scored the final basket of the half, as Itchen led 48-37.

Peter Turay would open the scoring in the second half with four quick inside scores, increasing Itchen’s lead to 15. After a quiet first half, Elias Poorman would come to life in the third, showing his ability to get to the hoop and spark a run for Alec Reed – keeping the pressure on Itchen. Late scores from Jonny Philipson & Jeremy Sochan allowed Itchen to regain a 12 point lead going into the final quarter.

Alec Reed would start the fourth with a renewed focus and an increased intensity on the defensive end. A 0-7 run in the opening minute saw the gap close instantly as the momentum swung towards the visitors. Poorman would score 12 of his 27 in this period, leading the charge as Alec Reed put relentless pressure on Itchen. Turay and Sochan showed patience down the stretch as the hosts pounded the ball inside which kept the visitors at bay. As the final minutes of the contest closed in, Itchen help a 85-82 lead. A Poorman score followed by a Turay response kept the lead at three, 87-84 lead to Itchen. Murray would finish in the paint for Alec Reed to close the gap to just one with a minute to play.

Itchen’s Rhys Sundimalt attacked the Alec Reed press and finished a reverse lay-up to regain a three point lead which saw Coach Daniel Szatkowski call a timeout. After the huddle, Poorman would come off a pick and roll, finding Abokar who would knock down a huge triple to tie the game with just 24 seconds remaining. Itchen used their final timeout which would result in Turay going to the line where he would convert one-from-two giving Itchen a one point lead, 90-89.

After a final timeout by Alec Reed, Turay would make a fantastic defensive play, resulting in a jump-ball with the possession arrow favouring Itchen. Alec Reed had to foul to send Titas Zydelis to the line where he would convert both free throws to give Itchen the lead at 92-89. A late effort by Rio Webster to tie the game from deep would be unsuccessful, as Itchen took a hard-fought win.

Itchen Coach Matt Guymon said after the exciting contest, “I was pleased that we were able to grind out a win against a tough Alec Reed squad. With that being said, our consistency on the defensive end must be better moving forward, especially if we want to win these tough games on the road.”

Peter Turay’s big performance for the hosts saw him lead all scorers with 35 points, while Jeremy Sochan added 18. Alec Reed were paced by 27 points from Elias Poorman, as Mo Adan chipped in with 19.
