Itchen College vs Barking Abbey

Barking Abbey picked up an 88-75 win over Itchen College, improving to 5-0 atop of the East Conference on Wednesday afternoon.

BA were led by Ade Adebayo’s 28 points, as he came up big down the stretch, whilst Robin Bedford had 21. BA overcame a monster 40-point outing from Aaron Berida, whilst Matt Hughes added 12 for Itchen.

Itchen jumped out of the blocks taking an early 7-2 lead before BA would turn up the defensive pressure to go on a 7-0 run of their own behind strong play from Ade Adebayo and Syridon Kapsalos. The team would exchange baskets during the final parts of the quarter with Itchen taking a slight 24-22 lead into the quarter break.

The home side would control the early parts of the second quarter opening up a 9 point lead. Itchen would be dealt a blow at the 4-minute mark where big man Ash Briggs would pick up a knee injury that would keep him out the rest of the contest. Robin Bedford would come to life at the mid point of the quarter scoring 12 of his 21 points and erasing Itchen’s lead as the teams would be deadlocked into the half-time break 42-42.

The second half would open with the visitors taking command behind the clinical play of Ade Adebayo & Robin Bedford which would create a 56-46 lead. The game was quickly getting out of reach for the home team until a spell of inspired play from point guard Aaron Berida who would score 14 points in 2 minutes to keep Itchen within touching distance 62-64 going into the final quarter.

Berida’s scoring run would continue in the fourth scoring another 5 points to give the home side their first lead of the half 67-66 before Ade Adebayo would take over down the stretch allowing BA to pull away in the final minutes giving them a 88-75 win.

“I was really disappointed in how we defended the dribble drive today allowing a number of Barking’s personnel to play to their strengths,” Itchen Head Coach Matt Guymon said. “All credit to BA as they are brought a very young team, that showed excellent composure down the stretch.

“I also want to acknowledge an outstanding performance from Aaron Berida, as without him today the game would have gotten away from us in the second half. Without question the most impressive individual performance that we have had at Itchen College.”

Itchen are home to BHASVIC in 2 weeks and Barking Abbey will host Oaklands.
