Itchen College vs Derby College Trailblazers

Itchen were able to hold on to a convincing 1st half lead to secure a 80-63 win to advance to the Final 4.

The game would see a change in venue for the home team as a broken basket at Itchen College Sports Hall meant partner University Solent would host the Elite 8 fixture. Derby Academy would get off to the perfect start, jumping out to a 9-2 lead before Peter Turay was substituted into the game and instantly swung the momentum, scoring 10 of his game high 27 in the period. A 12-0 run by Itchen in the final 3 minutes of the quarter gave them a 27-18 lead.

Itchen would turn up the defensive intensity in the 2nd quarter holding Derby to 6 points and were able to convert in transition the other way, extending the lead to 26 points before the half time break. The quarter would see a resurgence from the visitors however, as they locked in defensively and went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 16. Itchen were able to weather the storm behind 4 quick points by Peter Turay. As the quarter came to a close Itchen would lead 63-44.

Derby continued to apply the pressure at both ends of the floor, getting the score back to 16 on number of occasions, but it wasn’t enough, as Itchen were able to hold on in the final minutes to secure a 63-80 win.

“I was very happy with how we played at both ends for large spells of the first half. Unfortunately in the 2nd half we didn’t match Derby’s intensity and we let them set the tone and make a number of dangerous runs. Ultimately we were able to close out the game and I’m pleased that our guys get a chance to progress in the playoffs,” said Itchen Head Coach Matthew Guymon.

Itchen: Peter Turay 27, Matt Hughes 19

Derby: C. Brown 18, C.Matimba 16

Itchen will travel to Charnwood in the EABL Final 4 next Wednesday.
