Itchen College vs John Madejski Academy

Baszi Dorman made a layup with 4.4 seconds left to give Itchen a 65-64 over JMA on Wednesday afternoon.

“I was proud of how our guys competed today and the composure we showed down the stretch which allowed us to get over the line today,” Itchen Head Coach Matt Guymon said.

“In many of our losses this year we have been ahead, but when the pressure increases we have fallen apart but today I thought we became a more cohesive unit as the intensity increased.

“Huge credit to JMA who were up against it today missing influential players and their head coach, but I thought their guys dug deep and gave themselves opportunities to win in a tough environment on the road.”

Aaron Berida led Itchen with 22, Matt Hughes had 16, and Ash Briggs finished with 9.

Adria Nosa Castillo, Alex Drincic and Alex Gager top scored with 13 each for JMA.

Itchen would get the better of the early exchanges as JMA had to adjust style without the services of influential point guard Inigo Baena Perez. A 12-4 lead for the home team would force JMA coach Ben Fisher into an early timeout where the visitors would respond and the quarter would finish 20-17.

The second quarter would see JMA continue to respond going on a 7-0 run behind strong play of of Alex Gager and Alex Drincic and this time it would be the home team to call a timeout. The remainder of the quarter would see the teams trade blows with Itchen taking the lead 33-32 with a late score from Matt Hughes.

The third quarter would see multiple lead changes as Adrian Nosa would lead the charge for JMA and Aaron Berida was able to reply early. A mid-quarter run by Itchen which would give them a 47-43 lead. Alex Drincic would respond with a 5-0 run of his own and a Alex Gager 2 would see JMA regain the lead in the final minute. In the final seconds of the third quarter Aaron Berida would run the clock down and fire a 30 footer before time expired which swished in to give a huge momentum swing going into the final period.

The fourth quarter would be no different in this entertaining game as the lead for either team never stretched to more than 3 points. As we neared in on the 2-minute mark Itchen would hold a 1 point lead after back to back baskets from Ash Briggs and Matt Hughes.

A score from Alex Drincic gave the visitors a 62-61 lead. With 1:24 remaining Ash Briggs would receive the ball from the inbound and a 1 bounce jumpshot would result in a foul sending him to the line, where he was able to convert both free throws.

A JMA timeout would see them execute a play that would give Matt Armstrong a wide open long 2 pointer that would give JMA a 63-62 lead. Itchen would push the other way and a turnover would see JMA regain the ball with 40 seconds to play.

A rushed shot by JMA would see Itchen get the ball back for another possession that would end in a missed shot and the possession would go to JMA. JMA would take the ball on the end line with under under 30 seconds to play. A high ball screen would see Matt Armstrong shoot a 3 early into the clock, followed by a Alex Drincic three point miss out of bounds would see Itchen call a timeout with 10 seconds to play.

With the ball advanced to the front court Itchen got the ball to Ash Briggs on the block where a move baseline would find a cutting Baszi Dorman who would convert with 4.4 seconds to play.

A final timeout by JMA would see an unsuccessful attempt from Matt Armstrong as the buzzer expired to give Itchen the 65-64 win.

Itchen will be on the road to JMA and CoLA next week and JMA will play CoLA on the road in what should be an exciting end to the regular season.
