Itchen College vs Oaklands College

Itchen go into the half term break 3-1 with a 91-67 win over Oaklands College on Wednesday.

Reigning Player of the Week Ash Briggs led Itchen with 22 points, along with another 22 from Matt Hughes, whilst Aaron Berida added 19.

Oaklands would get the better of the opening exchanges with back to back 3’s from Wes Moore and Jordan George, but Itchen were able to counter behind strong play from Matt Hughes and Genay Zorro, which would allow the home side to take a 23-18 lead into the 1st quarter break.

In the second quarter Itchen was able to stretch the lead to double digits behind inspired play from Matt Hughes who would go on to score 11 of his 22 points to take the home team into half time with a 12 point lead 44-32.

The opening of the third quarter would see scrappy play and a lot of missed opportunities for both teams until the 6 minute mark where Itchen would go on a 9-0 run to open a 19-point advantage.

Oaklands were able to stop the bleeding behind free throws from Jose Morais and a 3 from Wurie before Aaron Berida was able to convert back to back buckets to give the home side a 20-point advantage going into the final quarter.

Itchen continued to control the early part of the quarter taking the largest lead of the game to 26. Oaklands still showed signed of fight going on an 8-0 run forcing Itchen to take a time-out to regain composure. The last 5 minutes would see both teams exchange baskets where Itchen would run out winners 91-67.

“I was proud of our guys focus and energy today playing against a very talented/athletic team,” Itchen Head Coach Matt Guymon commented.

“In previous weeks we have lacked composure at key times in the game at both ends of the floor, but it was very positive today to see how we responded in those pressure situations.”

Jordan George led Oaklands with 19, whilst Wes Moore added 12 points.

After half term Itchen will go away to CoLa whilst Oaklands will host Canterbury.
