Itchen College 42 v 89 Barking Abbey

Itchen suffered an 89-42 defeat at the hands of Barking Abbey to open their EABL season.

Barking would jump straight out of the blocks in this contest with back to back 3 pointers by Veron Eze and Louie Norton. After a couple of Itchen scores, Barking would go on their first meaningful run to open up a 15 point lead behind relentless defensive pressure and offensive rebounding.

The 2nd quarter would see much of the same in the early exchanges before Itchen could spark a 5-0 run of their own, led by Tyreese Hudson, which would cut the deficit to 15 and force a B.A timeout. following the break, Barking regained their composure and momentum, pushing out to a 42-19 lead at the half.

Barking were consistently able to take Itchen out of their rhythm offensively in the 2nd half, forcing a large number of turnovers before punishing the home side in transition. The visitors continued to run away with contest the longer the game wore on, eventually sealing a statement win by a significant margin.

Itchen Head Coach Matt Guymon said: “Credit to Barking, they are a talented and well coached group that played with incredible intensity at both ends of the floor. They were able to punish us in a number of areas today and unfortunately we weren’t able to match their physicality or respond to their defensive pressure. With a new group this will give us plenty to reflect on and correct in the next few days of practice.”

Top scorer for Itchen was Tyreese Hudson 15, followed up by Kalim Cantone who had 8. Barking Abbey’s Tautvydas Meilauskas led all scorers with 17 as Chris Feeney and Sam Alajiki both added 13.

Itchen will travel to Canterbury next week, whilst Barking host USP College.
