John Madejski Academy vs Barking Abbey School

Barking Abbey were made to work hard for their 10 point victory on Wednesday afternoon but they came away from Reading with a 68-58 win behind Robin Bedford and Jonathan Brown’s 16 points apiece.

JMA Head Coach Alan Keane was complimentary of the opposition but felt it was an opportunity missed for his team, stating: Anytime you play Barking it’s as tough as it gets. There depth in talent and coached really well makes them a formidable force. Today we didn’t help ourselves shooting 50% from the FT line and lapses of concentration led to some easy baskets that proved very costly. Having been up 1 in third and then to go on a 0-10 run was tough to recover from in a low scoring game that showed positives on defence from both sides. All credit to Barking who closed out the game very well.”

The first five minutes of the contest were a very close affair as both teams looked to get a hold in the game and this remained right throughout the first quarter as the visitors to Reading took a two point advantage into the second quarter, leading 14-16 after ten. The game followed the same trend until Barking Abbey manage to extend their lead to six, two minutes before half time but were pegged back by a JMA three with the visitors leading 29-32 at the half time interval.

JMA came out firing in the third quarter and held their first and only lead of the game after three minutes at 35-34. The league leaders duly responded and a 10-0 run followed as Barking led 35-44 midway through the third period. JMA kept fighting but faced an eight point deficit heading into the final quarter with the score 42-50 in favour of Barking. Barking extended their lead to 14 with five minutes of the contest remaining. An Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo three pointer gave the hosts some hope with three minutes left with the score at 54-64 but JMA then missed four consecutive free throws as Barking kept their 100% record in tact and took the win 58-68.

Supporting Jonathan Brown and Robin Bedford was Ade Adebayo with 12 and Nathaniel Powell with 9 for the victors. For JMA, Adrian Nosa led all scorers in the game with 20 points, Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo had 16 and Ross Stepney had 8.

JMA travel to the south coast next Wednesday 6th February to take on BHASVIC whilst Barking Abbey host Itchen College in a top of the table clash.
