John Madejski Academy vs City of London Academy

John Madejski Academy made it two wins on the bounce as a dominant second quarter performance helped them on the way to a 86-65 victory over City of London Academy on Wednesday afternoon, behind David Chive’s 20 points.

JMA Coach Alan Keane was pleased his team chalked up another win but knows there are parts of the game that will need to be reviewed in order for his team to be better.

Coach Keane said, “Today was a very positive performance by our guys, we have taken some really good steps over the past three games especially at the defensive end of the floor. A lot of credit must go to the players for an excellent second quarter and, despite a shaky third, the group showed a great ability to bounce back and close out the game – recording a really good win.”

The game started out as a tight affair with both teams finding their range from behind the arc, but it was the visitors that looked the stronger after the opening exchanges as they led 2-10, only for the hosts to peg back CoLA as the quarter finished just 18-19 in favour of the away team.

The second quarter was a completely different affair as JMA poured in six threes and limited their opponents to just eight points to win the period 33-8 and head into the locker room with a 24 point lead, up 51-27.

However, CoLA were not done yet, as a 12-2 run in the opening five minutes of the third quarter ensured the contest was well and truly alive; closing what seemed an insurmountable deficit to just 12 points. The teams headed into the final stanza with the score 65-53 to JMA.

CoLA did manage to cut the deficit to single digits, but a rejuvenated JMA regained their 20 point lead to take a 77-57 advantage with five minutes remaining in the game. Both teams fought hard to the end, but it was the home team that saw out the clock to secure a 21 point victory, 86-65.

Supporting David Chive for JMA was Sam Grant who had 17 points, while Latrell Maitland and Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo added 11 apiece for the hosts. For CoLA, Louis Norton-Cuffy led their attack with 19 points, whilst Patrick Lanipekun had 13 and Taiga Forster chipped in seven.

JMA host BHASVIC on Wednesday 12 December in a re-arranged game, before CoLA host BHASVIC the following week on Wednesday 19 December to close out the first half of the season.
