John Madejski Academy 113 v 71 Copleston High School

A solid first game of the season from John Madejski Academy saw them beat an undermanned Copleston squad by a flattering margin of 113-71. JMA’s coach Alan Keane noted post game: “It was a typical early season EABL game, both teams are still building and getting used to playing together. There were plenty of positives to take away from the game and almost as many aspects that we can improve on as well. Admittedly it was tough for Copleston today with Ethan [Price] out.”

A strong first quarter saw JMA finish with a 27-18 lead following a 14-3 run from the tip, sparked by some easy transition baskets and back to back 3’s from Sam Grant and Asher Ndah.

The second quarter saw Copleston respond quickly with consecutive 3’s from Ben Winter. The visitors continued to shoot well from behind the arc, finishing the quarter with a total of five made tripless, keeping them just within reach of JMA at halftime, 38-54.

The hosts enjoyed a strong third quarter, extending their lead while putting up an impressive 32 points. With David Chive driving the defensive intensity and James Jolly finding his range offensively, JMA continued to pull away with Jolly notching 12 of his 22 points in the period.

Coach Keane’s side continued to score freely in the final quarter and Copleston cooled off behind the arc, scoring just a single triple in the final frame. JMA ran out comfortable winners in the end with some opportunistic transition scores, including a steal and break away dunk from Sam Grant.

Top scorers for JMA were Sam Grant 28, James Jolly 22 with David Chive and Latrell Maitland both scoring 10 a piece. Copleston’s top scorers were Jacob Morgan with 22 points, Ben Winters had 12 and Emmanuel Onwuka finished with 10.

JMA host CoLA next week while Copleston have the week off and before returning to EABL play with a road game against CoLA as well.
