John Madejski Academy vs Copleston High School

Copleston High recorded an impressive away win in Reading on Wednesday afternoon as they ran out winners 54-70 behind Ethan Price’s 26 point haul.

JMA Head Coach Alan Keane was disappointed with his team’s performance and reflected, “Today was another missed opportunity. Credit must go to Copleston for their performance. However we must look at ourselves as a team and where our level of consistency lies. We had numerous opportunities to take control of the game but missing too many easy opportunities and not taking advantage of defensive stops proved critical. It has been a bumpy two weeks with back to back loses but we will keep building and move on.”

Copleston led the game from start to finish and an important 6-0 run close to the end of the first quarter meant a 24-16 lead after the first ten minutes of action. The away team were however knocked by the loss of their talisman Ben Winter who jarred his knee close to the end of the first period and the 6’3 guard was sadly unable to return to the game.

However, this did not deter a spirited Copleston team and an 8-0 run midway through the second quarter meant they stretched their advantage to 15, 29-44. The home team did respond to this with a 10-3 run to end the first half just seven points behind as both teams headed to the locker room with the score finely poised at 40-47.

With the game quite high scoring, the third quarter did not follow suit with both teams struggling to score. JMA had numerous chances to convert their 8 third quarter steals but a number of missed attempts resulted in Copleston stretching their lead 48-56 heading into the final period.

The home team continued to struggle to score with a combination of good defence by their opponents and poor misses and this eventually resulted in a 6-14 final stanza with Copleston coming out with a 16 point win, 54-70.

Supporting Ethan Price was Veron Eze with 13 and Thomas Payne with 12 for the visitors. JMA were led by Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo’s 11, Adrian Nosa Castillo had 10 and David Chive added 8 for the hosts who moved to 1-2.

JMA are back in action next week when they travel to Oaklands College whilst Copleston High entertain BHASVIC on the same day.
