John Madejski Academy vs Itchen College

John Madejski Academy opened their EABL season with a hard fought victory over Itchen College on Wednesday afternoon in Reading behind Adrian Nosa Castillo’s 21 points.

JMA Head Coach Alan Keane was pleased to see his team record their first win of the season against a tough opponent in Itchen College. He said,

“First game nerves really showed in the first quarter but credit to Itchen for opening the game with great energy. Defensively we looked disruptive but this needs to be on a more consistent level. It was a good opportunity for our new players to break the ice and make their mark.”

“Itchen are a very good team and the game gave us a great opportunity to benchmark where we are and evidence of areas to develop.”

It was however the visitors to Reading that started the game brighter as a 15-4 run midway through the first quarter gave Itchen a 9-20 lead with three and a half minutes left in the opening period. However, JMA trimmed the deficit to six at the end of the first ten minutes with the Southampton based team ahead 15-21.

The second quarter was a game of runs as JMA opened up with a 6-0 advantage to tie the game at 21 after three minutes before a 7-2 run by the away team restored their advantage at 23-28. Both teams then went on 6-0 runs before the half time buzzer sounded with Itchen ahead by four points, leading 33-37 at the half time interval.

The third quarter was the highest scoring stanza of the game with both teams finding their rhythm on offence with 53 points shared between the two as JMA closed the gap and finished the quarter behind by only one point, 61-62.

JMA opened up the final ten minutes in buoyant fashion as an 11-4 run gave the hosts their biggest lead of the game, 72-66 to the good with five minutes to go in the contest. Itchen did then close the gap to just a single point again but big three’s from David Chive and Adrian Nosa Castillo gave the home team an 81-74 advantage heading into the last 90 seconds of action. JMA held on for the win on the opening day of the EABL season with an 84-78 victory.

Supporting JMA’s Adrian Nosa Castillo was David Chive and Asher Ndah with 12 points apiece and Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo and David Obediah with 9 each. For Itchen College, Jeremy Sochan led all scorers in the game with 25 points personal with Matt Hughes scoring 22 and Peter Turay 18.
