Loreto College vs Derby College/Noel Baker School

On the opening Wednesday afternoon of the 2017-18 EABL season, Loreto College secured a victory at home against Derby/Noel Baker, 73-66.

The opening few minutes was a scrappy affair with both teams trading baskets. The home side managed to finish the quarter up by 9 points behind the hot shooting of Arinze Emeka-anyakwo.

The shooting continued in the second period and Loreto went into the break with a 14 point lead, 42-28.

The second half continued in much the same vein with the home side stretching the lead to 23 by the end of the third.

Noel Baker changed things up going into the last period by using a zone press to speed up the tempo and force mistakes.

The once calm and efficient home side were now thrown into disarray. By the midway point in the quarter the lead was now only 9 points.

With Loreto’s key men fouling out, the dying minutes of the contest were were a very tentative affair with the hosts coming up with a few important and long overdue baskets to hold out for a 73-66 victory

Coach Peter Paraskeva commented after the game:

“They are a well coached team that play in the right way and I have a lot of respect for the way they fought back into the game. We have to learn how to deal with pressure and the flow of the game. Learning when to play quick and when to slow down will be key to our team’s development.”

Loreto were led by Arinze Emeka-anyakwo with 26, Michael Anumba, who had 14 and Wesley Oba with 9.

Noel Baker were led by Leighton Elliott-Sewell’s 20, Myles Alexander with 8 and Jacques Misamba with 7.

Loreto are on the road next week at Birmingham Met while Noel Baker host SGS.
