Manchester Magic Academy vs James Watt College

Wednesday afternoon saw James Watt College make the trip up the M6 to face the Manchester Magic Academy. After a low scoring affair, it was James Watt that took a 47-57 victory.

The first five minutes saw Magic go on a 15-4 run to open the contest, with Manchester’s Jason Ani scoring the first five points. By the mid-point of the first period James Watt had settled into the game and fought back well, behind a fantastic job on the glass by Wakeem Richardson who would finish the contest with a game-high 18 points.

The visitors implemented 2-3 and 3-2 zone defences for the rest of the game which continued to cause Manchester problems, with the hosts heading into the final period down by four. Early in the fourth James Watt picked up multiple steals and easy break-away layups to take an eight point lead, which the Magic would not recover from.

Manchester were led by 11 points from Jason Ani, as Josh Grant had 10 and Dan Gargan chipped in 9. In addition to Wakeem Richardson’s 18 point effort, James Watt had contributions from Ian Rodriguez with 15 and Daniel Penkov who had 12.

Magic Coach Peter Paraskeva commented after the game, “We were simply no where near the standard today. We have to remember how young we are, and with that comes inexperience in vital moments. When the pressure was on we didn’t execute but that is all part of the learning process.”

Next week sees the Magic take on Myerscough on the road, while James Watt College make the trip up to Newcastle on 28 November.
