Newcastle Eagles Academy v The Sheffield College

Newcastle Eagles Academy 97- 76 Sheffield College

An intense defensive display from Newcastle ensured they ended the season on a high, picking up their first win in three attempts at the brand-new Eagles Community Arena.

The hosts applied pressure early on through their full court pressure defence and raced to a 24-11 lead with 7 minutes played, behind 10 points from centre Jeremy Lievin, only for Harrison Bell to put the visitors on his back and hit three 3’s unanswered to help stem the flow of points, and the first quarter ended 28-24.

A switch in defence from Newcastle lead to a dominating second quarter as Newcastle had big scoring contributions from Evboumwan, Moore and Lievin leading to a crushing 27-12 period and a half time lead of 55- 36

Sheffield, to their credit, never gave up and despite another one-sided quarter of 25-13 in the third, they regained some composure to win the fourth quarter 17-27 as Newcastle rotated their bench.

Newcastle Head Coach Ian Macleod said: “It was important we ended the season in a positive manner, and not just from a result perspective, but with a good performance. We haven’t been good defensively of late and it was important to the lads that they put the best version of themselves out there this final time. It was also nice to get our first win in our new arena!”

Top scorers for Newcastle were; Jeremy Lievin (22), Tosan Evboumwan (22) and Theo Riley (19). For Sheffield JJ Wright (20) lead the way, Harrison Bell had 19, and Reyan West added 13

Both teams have now completed their regular season with Newcastles record at 4-10, and Sheffields at 2-12.
