Newcastle Eagles Academy vs James Watt College

A dominant second period from James Watt College was the foundation for a hard-fought 80-87 road win over Newcastle Eagles Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

The visitors led early, opening up a 10-18 advantage after seven minutes, but a strong finish to the quarter meant Newcastle went into the second up 22-20. The second period saw James Watt force multiple turnovers to create transition scores as they took a commanding 33-46 lead into the half-time break.

The third was a back-and-forth affair with James Watt edging it 23-24, behind 12 points from Daniel Penkov. Despite a flash point midway through the period, resulting in a coach ejection, the visiting players kept a cool head a took a 14 point lead into the fourth quarter.

Newcastle brought the game level at 72-72 with six minutes to play, but poor free throw shooting and careless turnovers allowed the visitors to take full advantage and battle well for a deserved win.

Tosan Evboumwan led all scorers with 35 points for Newcastle, supported by 16 from Theo Riley and 15 from Dan Ridley. James Watt were led by Daniel Penkov’s 23 points, as Wakeem Richardson added 22 and Conor Lynch chipped in 18.

Newcastle will host Myerscough College next week, while James Watt return home for a visit from SGS College.
