Newcastle Eagles Academy vs Myerscough College

The Northern Conference match-up in the North East ended as a dominant win for Myerscough College, who ran out convincing 36-101 winners against Newcastle Eagles Academy.

The damage was done early, as Myerscough forced multiple turnovers with their trapping zone defence, holding the hosts to a meagre five points in the first quarter.

There were some improvements for the Eagles in the second, but another big 13-29 quarter for Mysercough gave them a commanding 18-52 half-time lead, behind a balanced scoring attack and creating transition opportunities.

The third period saw the visitors continue their dominance, taking the quarter by 19 points, and while there was some improvement in the fourth for the hosts, they were convincingly beaten by the better team 36-101.

Newcastle Coach Ian Macleod said, “We knew it would be a very tough game today. It was important we took a step forward despite the result and I think we did that. Our success as a programme this season will not be defined by the scoreboard against Myerscough, they are a well-established and incredibly strong programme.”

The hosts were led by 10 points from Theo Riley, while Adam Fetherston added eight and Jeremy Lievin chipped in seven. Meanwhile, Myerscough were paced by Callan Low’s 18 points, with Jamie Gray and Travis Edwards contributing 11 points apiece.

The Eagles now head into the Christmas break, having completed their EABL fixtures for 2018, while Myerscough prepare to take on the challenge of the EYBL in coming weeks before their festive break can begin.
