Oaklands College 59 – 74 City of London Academy

In their first home game of 2020, Oaklands knew they faced a competitive team in COLA under Jr. Williams and it was the away side that snatched a 59-74 win.

As predicted CoLA rushed off the blocks with a 0- 6 run led by 5 early points from Kavell Hawes. The much changed Oaklands line up found their feet and gave a response through scores from Findley D’Avilar and Issac Woherem, although it wasn’t enough to slow down COLA who finished the quarter 9-18 ahead.

In the 2nd quarter it was Welsh international Oliver Wright who once again stepped up for Oaklands College, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the quarter making four triples along the way. It was enough to stifle the visitors and a 24-16 quarter meant the game was all square at 34 at the half.

COLA came out the break with more energy and renewed intent as they scored a quick 7 unanswered points to pull away, despite Oaklands efforts they could never pull themselves back and the lead grew over a 13-23 quarter.

COLA continued to show their quality and depth with 10 different players getting in on the scoring action in the second half, where as Oaklands struggled to maintain their much improved performance standard for the full 40 minutes. COLA won the last quarter 12-17 and with it the game.

Oaklands have plenty of reason to feel optimistic after their performance, something Oliver Wright pondered after the game: “The guys did a great job to responding to a slow start in the first quarter.

“We found our rhythm offensively and competed defensively to allow us to go on a run of our own.

“Frustratingly, we were not able to maintain the performance level in the second half, which meant we were unable to match and respond to COLA’s effort.”

Oaklands were lead by a game high 20 points from Wright, supported by 7 a piece for Nick Powdrell and Issac Woherem.

COLA has multiple players on the score sheet, Guard Kavell Hawes led the way for the travelling team with 15 personal with Andre Parker adding 11 points and Oscar Leigh-Hales adding 10 points.

Next week Oaklands are at home once more against Copleston High School while CoLA are home to Itchen College.
