Oaklands College 70 – 58 USP College

Oaklands College grabbed their 2nd win of the season, triumphing 70- 58 over USP College.

Oaklands College hosted a USP team looking to claim their first victory of the season. The visitors were first off the blocks as they jumped to a 6-0 lead without response from the home team.

Oaklands soon found a way to break down a stubborn SUSP zone defence and found some rhythm in a close 1st quarter. The period ending with a narrow advantage for the home side 14-13.

As the half continued both teams struggled to gain any momentum, as the tempo increased so did with turnovers, costing both sides. However Oaklands managed to squeeze ahead holding a 35-27 lead into the locker room.

USP second half efforts were centred around trying to catch Oaklands on the break, but they struggled to break down Oaklands’ improved defence which gave the home side chances to break themselves.

Oaklands stayed ahead, frustrating USP through consecutive stops with the home side adding to their lead by a single point in the third and by three points in the fourth to win all quarters, despite a competitive USP team best efforts.

After the game Toby Gastaldi-Davies said: “We were frustrated at the beginning because of the slow start and turnovers. We stayed together, trusted each other and committed to our style of basketball to get us through in the end”

For the home team, Gastaldi-Davies led all scorers with 24 points , supported by Woherem on 13 and Douglas and D’Avilar both adding 8 each.

Cato led the scoring for the visitors with 15, followed by Dunbar who had 14 and Antoine 13.

Oaklands next home game is against Canterbury tomorrow in a rearranged fixture, while USP are away to Itchen next week.
