Oaklands College vs Alec Reed Academy

The season opener for Oaklands College and Alec Reed Academy saw the hosts start strong, but the visitors had a reply. Both teams had periods of superiority throughout the contest, as the game came down to the final period.

The fourth quarter saw Alec Reed go up by seven points, but as Oaklands came back with a run of scores it looked like the home team had the momentum. However, in the final minute Alec Reed stayed calm under pressure, as Xavier Donegal scored to push the Alec Reed lead to four points with less than 35 seconds remaining. Despite a frantic end to the game from the Oaklands players, it was the visitors that came out on top by a single point.

Oaklands Coach Michael Ball said, “All credit to Alec Reed and Coach Daniel Szatkowski. I thought they played more consistently throughout the game and there were not enough moments when we applied ourselves at both ends of the floor.”

Coach Ball continued, “It is a very steep learning curve for the guys at the moment and it will be interesting to see what each player learns from todays experience. The EABL is such a competitive league and every week is a fantastic opportunity for our young men to develop. I have to be pleased at the offensive end and the players are working hard in practice to add to their skill-set – however it is obvious that we have a defensive journey to go on this year.”

Oaklands were led by Jose Morias’ 24 points, as Ola Olenrele and Ope Afolabi added 16 apiece. Alec Reed were led by Mo Adan with 28 points, as Elias Poorman had 26 and Xavier Donegal added 12.

Oaklands travel to Copleston next week, whilst Alec Reed host JMA.
