Oaklands College vs Copleston Sixth Form

Copleston Sixth Form picked up a 66-72 road win over Oaklands College in the EABL on Wednesday at Oaklands College St Albans Campus.

Copleston had were led by a monster 35 points and 13 rebounds by Jonny Hall with Ben Winter chipping in with 14 and Pelumi Oguntoyibo with 11 to round out the top scorers.

The home side had Jordan George with 18 points, Wes Moore with 16 and Jose Morais had 10 to finish as one of Oaklands top scorers.

Oaklands Coach Tom Baker said:

“It is an ongoing journey for us this season where we have to be disciplined to play our style for the whole game. There were periods where we were successful however we struggled to cope with Jonny down low and at some crucial moments some poor decision making hurt us. Credit to Coach Drane for his team getting their first win of the season it was deserved in how they played.”

Oaklands were the team on the board first with a 3-pointer from their leading scorer Jordan George. Copleston responded quickly and set the tone for the rest of the game by being able to find Jonny Hall down low and the 7ft big responding by scoring 5 unanswered points with 1 of them coming from the foul line.

With both teams scoring sporadically in the first quarter, Jonny would continue to give Oaklands problems scoring 12 of his 35 points in the first quarter. Jordan George chipped in with another 3-pointer toward the end of the first to bring the game back to a tied game at 14-14 and it was Oaklands who ended the first quarter ahead 20-18 thanks to some strong play from Wes Moore.

An 8-0 run during the middle part of the second quarter put Copleston up 31-24 thanks to some scoring again from Jonny Hall and Pelumi Oguntoyibo also chipped in with his first 3-pointer of the game but Oaklands responded quickly with scores from Jordan George and Wes Moore again to put them back up by 1. Ben Winter ended the quarter with a trip to the foul line which meant Copleston went into half time 33-32 up.

Jonny continued to dominate down low and got the second half off with a another trip to the foul line for Copleston. Ope Afolabi hit back to back 3s and a drive to the basket from Jose Morais put Oaklands up by 5 points early on in the third quarter. The teams went back and forth throughout the rest of the third quarter, Blake Reid hit his first 3 pointer of the game with Darren Ainembabazi hitting a 3 pointer for Oaklands as the lead changed on a consistent basis.

It was a 10-0 run thanks to points from Pelumi, Blake, Troy and Jonny during the first 3 minutes of the fourth quarter that put Copleston in control and the home side struggled to find ways to score. A couple of late three pointers from Jose and Jordan George weren’t enough to put Oaklands back in the game and Copleston were able to close out to their first win of the campaign.

Most teams have a week off now, when they return Oaklands travel to BHASVIC and Copleston with travel to Canterbury.
